Ok, so the simple answer is to not speed but that is easier said than done. I live on the east coast and frequently travel through the Tri State area and the flow of traffic always seems to be around 10+ MPH over the speed limit. In many areas travelling at the speed limit is more dangerous than not speeding and keeping up with the flow. Driving at the speed limit can sometimes anger drivers and you end up with high beams being flashed at you and horns honked. Everyone is always in a rush. Where’s the fire?

I invested in a radar detector and I have been driving with one for 12 years now. I am not an avid speeder but I do travel with the flow of traffic and that means I am technically almost always speeding. With the economy the way it is today, it seems like more and more tickets are being written to help cover state deficits. I find the radar detector makes me a more aware driver and when it goes off it gives me time to check my speed to make sure I am not speeding.

Sure a radar detector is not a guarantee that you will not get a ticket since there are different technologies that are used today (Radar, Laser, Vascar, Etc.) but it sure does give you some advantages that the other cars on the road do not have. For drivers like me it’s a very useful tool, if you speed and drive dangerously I hope you do get pulled over and get a ticketed.

Why is the speed limit only 50 MPH on many roads which could support higher speeds? My opinion is because writing tickets is a revenue stream and they do not want to lose that revenue. Low end radar detectors can be bought for around $100, Good Detectors for under $200 and the Best Radar Detectors in the $300 to $500 range. When considering the cost of a speeding ticket and court fee’s (Average cost of a speeding ticket is around $150) and what it can cost you additionally on insurance increases (Average cost of $900 over a 3 year period) for just one speeding ticket, radar detector are a great investment.
