Warm Up to Winter Motoring – Morning Edition

When the winter months blow in and blanket our streets and byways with the white fluffy stuff, it’s always fun and games, for about five minutes that is. At six minutes, the harsh reality of winter sets in: snow, cold, ice, sleet, traffic snarls, fender bender, hidden pot holes, salt, etc. Driving during these months can be a real drag for even the most spirited motorists. But take heart, here are a few tips and tricks you can employ to take the chill off of winter driving.

First off, nothing’s worse than dragging yourself out of those warm cozy covers, slogging across your driveway and climbing into that sub-zero icebox that your car became over night. It takes forever for your engine to warm up enough to heat the cabin while you sit and shiver. This is where a remote starter comes into play. While you’re wolfing down your undercooked eggs instant coffee, your car sits idling itself to a toasty warmth well before you have to climb into it.

Next, if you’re lucky, there’s that blanket of snow covering your windshield. If you’re not lucky, there’s a sheet of ice on your windshield instead. Though the former is easier to deal with, a quality windshield cover will take care of both. Kind of like an insulated blanket for your windshield, a windshield cover blocks the snow and insulates from the ice, making sure you have a clear view each morning. It’s a lot easier than scraping ice and waiting for your defroster to cut the fog.

Of course, all of this can be avoided by storing your ride in a garage. But if you’re not equipped with your own outer building, check into a heavy-duty car cover. Along the same lines, when RV owners store their too-big-for-a-garage trailers, they use a special trailer cover. Obviously, a trailer cover is going to stay in place a lot longer than a car cover, which you have to put on and take off every time you drive. But, it will make a big difference in keeping your car ready to roll.

Now winter driving entails a lot more than just staying warm in the morning, but you gotta admit, “warm” is a great way to start the day off on the right foot. Instead of shivering your snowballs off and waiting for your car to heat up, employ the above tips and you’ll be snug as a bug, guaranteed.
