Cleaning egg off your car

Cleaning Egg Off Your Car

Unfortunately it’s a fairly common occurrence for a car to be ‘egged’ and it’s important to clean the remains of the attack off as soon as possible. If egg residue is left to sit on the surface of a car and dry it can prove to be very difficult to remove and can even inflict damage.

The first thing that should be done is to pre foam the affected area and allow to dwell. This will help to loosen up the remains and lift them from the surface. The foam should then be thoroughly rinsed off.

If you do not have access to a foaming attachment or have a pressure washer with a chemical injection system you can pre treat the area with a diluted all purpose cleaner or a bug remover type product, again allowing the product to dwell in order to loosen the residue then thoroughly rinse off. This should be done in the shade to prevent any cleaning product from drying onto the surface. When rinsing its important to ensure that any small fragments of egg shell are completely removed.

Once pre foamed / pre treated and thoroughly rinsed, the area should then be washed as normal with a designated shampoo product, rinsed and dried. This process should ensure that all egg and eggshell remains are safely and successfully removed.

Once the remains have been removed you should inspect the area for any damage. If the egg has left a stain type mark on paintwork you should polish the area to remove it. Begin with an all in one product, stepping up to an abrasive product if necessary. If the egg impacted the surface hard the shell can leave chips in the paintwork which will unfortunately require professional body shop attention. You can in the meantime work over the damaged paintwork with an all in one polish product to help fill and protect it and prevent it from getting any worse.

For stains left on plastics a designated plastic cleaner/dressing product should be used to rejuvenate and restore the area. If metals or chrome are affected an appropriate metal/chrome cleaner/polish product should be used to remove the stain and restore the area, and if glass has been marked a designated glass cleaner should first be used and then followed up with a glass polish product.

Obviously due to the nature of a ‘car egging’ it may not be noticed until it has completely dried onto the surface. If possible though it should be cleaned off immediately. If it is not possible to do this you can place a wet towel over the area until it can be properly cleaned, which will prevent the egg from drying.

This is another important reason why your car should be polished, protected and regularly maintained as this will help to prevent the egg from bonding to and staining the surface and can also help to a certain extent to protect the paintwork from potential shell inflicted damage.
