Eco-Driving Scheme For Lorry Drivers
Starting from the 8th of March 2010, the Government has started a new scheme to train all LGV and PCV drivers to learn how to drive more eco-friendly.
The aim of the scheme is to try and save 3 million tonnes of CO2 over five years and ?300 million in fuel costs. This is according to the Transport Minister Paul Clark.
Whether you an existing lorry driver or you’ve just become one and bought a brand new lorry or chose from a selection of Daf Used Trucks. The training will be made mandatory for all LGV drivers and is a part of the EU Driver Certificate of Professional Competence, also known as Driver CPC. This scheme was also introduces to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Currently the eco-driver training is a voluntary, which was a part of the driver CPC training. So many drivers already have the knowledge to drive in an eco-friendly way already.
There will be a 16 weeks consultation period, which will set out the options which will enable 90% of lorry drivers to receive eco-driver training. There are also plans to increase promotion of the benfits of eco driver training to encourage greater take up.
These measures have been set up to support the commitment made by the Department for Transport to save an additional 85 million tonnes of CO2 from domestic transport from 2018 to 2022.
Green house gas emissions are primarily cause by the road sector, of which Large Goods vehicles represent 20 per cent of the total domestic transport CO2 emissions.
Things that will be covered on this training are how to improve aerodynamics performance, how to drive at an efficient speed, fuel efficiency and choice of gear, best practice for acceleration and braking and anticipation of traffic and driving conditions.
Eco driver training in the future will hopefully include actual practical driver training, although it would cost more, rather than just class room based training. There are many LGV lorry driver training schools already gearing up to dish out the new course, so it shouldn’t be too hard to get yours done swiftly.
