Find a driving instructor in the UK

When looking to begin driving lessons it is important to source a good driving instructor from within a reputable driving school. It is also important to keep in mind that not all driving instructors are created equal. There are generally two types of Driving Instructors: Approved Driving Instructors and Trainee Driving Instructors. Trainee Driving Instructors are still undergoing the training process on their way to becoming ADI’s. ADI’s have met the necessary standard and as such are qualified to begin instructing learner’s in the process of learning to drive.

As you will be making a substantial outlay to pay for driving lessons – the majority of learner’s pay over ?1000 for driving lessons over the course of their lifetime – it’s important to make sure you choose the right driving instructor. You can differentiate between a Trainee Driving Instructor and an Approved Driving Instructor by the type of certificate displayed on the windscreen of their vehicle. All instructors are legally obliged to display this certificate at all times. A pink certificate indicates that the instructor is still undergoing training towards becoming a fully qualified driving instructors; a green certificate means that the driving instructor is a fully-qualified ADI. Only ADI’s have the legal entitlement to charge for driving lessons in the UK. Only ADI’s are registered with the Driving Standards Agency and meet the necessary grade to teach learner’s to drive at a proficient standard.

To qualify as an ADI, the instructor must have held a driving license for a period of more than four years, passed a demanding driving test, passed a more difficult theory test than the one given to learner drivers, maintain a high standard of instruction (instructors are regularly examined by DSA officials) and be registered with the DSA. Quiz your new driving instructor and make sure that they meet all of these requirements.

Nine out of ten people in the UK learn to drive with an ADI. As such, it’s important to keep in mind a specific set of requirements when looking for a suitably qualified instructor who possesses the necessary skills to teach you how to drive at a proficient standard. Your ADI is there to provide you with all sorts of advice relating to driving and is your one point of contact should you have any questions. Your ADI should advise you on the types of resources to consult in order to pass your theory test and on how to stay safe on the road.

You should ask your driving instructors or driving schools a range of questions to make sure your specific requirements are satisfied. You can ask your school to provide pass rate statistics, the model of car used for tuitions, the age of the car used for tuition, the safety features on the tuition vehicle, the gender of your driving instructor (ask for a female instructor if it makes you more comfortable), whether they can provide you with various resources for passing your theory test (e.g. books) and much more.

Think about the questions you wish to ask you instructor prior to meeting with him or her and remember to shop around to find the right school for you.
