How to Increase Gas Mileage Without Disappointment

Many motorists are wondering how to increase gas mileage without having to resort to buying a hybrid, or step down to a smaller class of vehicle.  This has lead to a number of snake-oil salesmen plying their trade to unsuspecting consumers.  These individuals and companies make incredible promises regarding the results that can be gained from using their devices and gadgets when it comes to lowering the amount of fuel a vehicle uses.

One of the most popular variants of this type of product is a device consisting of an electric fan which is inserted into an engine’s air-intake tube.  The blades on this fan spin while the motor is in operation, and the claim is made that by agitating the air it can somehow encourage it to mix better with the spray of fuel that is injected into each cylinder.  The science behind this type of claim is non-existent, yet there is a brisk business to be found in peddling these types of products.

Another unlikely method for increasing gas mileage comes in the form of magnets which drivers are told to attach to the fuel lines in the engine bay of their vehicle.  The magnets purportedly re-align the molecules of fuel in such a manner as to make them burn more efficiently, thus improving fuel economy.  Unfortunately, there is no validity to these statements, and having powerful magnets in the engine bay is never a good idea, particularly if they are located near the car’s ECU.

This isn’t to say that there aren’t solutions when it comes to lowering the amount of fuel your car uses.  Switching from standard petroleum oil to a synthetic oil can see a marked improvement in the overall fuel economy of your car or truck.  In fact, the effect can be notice even at high rpm’s, as oil consumption at faster speeds or under heavy loads is dramatically reduced when compared to standard oil.  This helps keep oil out of the combustion chamber, allowing for greater efficiency and a cleaner burn.

Synthetic oils have been tested for decades by independent laboratories as well as government agencies in order to verify the science behind the performance and efficiency improvements.  The type of product hawked on late night infomercials has most likely never been tested outside the garage of its inventor.  When it comes time to make a decision regarding how to increase gas mileage and engine protection, it is a much safer choice to go with a quality synthetic oil than it is to buy into the pie in the sky claims of these devices and products.
