How To Wax A Car
Most people who ask how to wax a car, are typically more interested in learning proper product selection of car waxes, and frequency of application. As an expert in car detailing, I offer many people a simplified approach to learning how to wax their car.
As a strarting point, which ever brand of wax product you choose, follow the instructions on the label. Because we have been given so many choices of wax products, it can get overwhelming as to where to start, so I will start with the basics and move on from there:
There are three (3) areas of proper paint care:
- Cleaning (seperate from washing; washing is just that, washing)
- Polishing
- Protecting, which also includes enhancing
Many opinions get spread around and just like any subject, more bad information exists than good, reliable information; car care is no exception. But proper car care can be simplified into (3) simple steps:
- Wash car weekly
- Use a surface prep bar (most commonly calle the “clay bar”)
- Wax paint every 4-12 weeks
If a person were to simply follow this plan, the paint on their car would not only outlast your interestin the car, but would look better than 98% of the cars on the road.
The days of spending all day washing and waxing your car are gone thanks to advances in chemical engineering; hard to use paste waxes are days gone by. Being in the auto detailing business, I can use a quality spray wax on the majority of cars, and still produce professional results of car detailing.
I recommend people outsource there car washing needs to a reliable car wash service. Give yourslef back your hour of time, and outsource this tiresome chore. After your car has been washed, simply drive home and apply some minimal effort in the detailing process.

- Wax with a name brand spray wax
The surface prep bar (clay bar) is a firm, palm sized slab of stiff like “Playdoh”. It is used to remove surface contaminates (pollution, overspray) often called fall-out. Normal washing and waxing won’t remove these contaminates that embed into your paints surface. Using the clay bar to clean the paint prior to waxing is the proper order. Any clay bar from the name brand manufacturers will do: Mothers, Meguiar’s, etc.
Spray waxes offer the winning combination of benefits when it comes to auto wax products. While the best auto wax is a subjective call, I prefer CSI Q-7 wax in my world of professional auto detailing; it will handle the needs of most people and most cars.
